REVENGE

Ponce, a twenty-year-old horse trainer, and an Apache by birth, has made a prodigious fortune on his two great thoroughbreds. A combination of understanding and fanatical concentration compells him to extract the best from his horses to whom he is bound in a relationship of emotional interdependence--they depend on him to realize their full potential as champions and he on them to fulfil fulfill himself as a man and creator. Deeply hurt by the death of a horse, he is reluctant to become over-involved with a high strung filly who exercises a magnetic influence over him. When the filly, Revenge, falls ill, he abandons her training and places her in the hands of a skillful Indian girl whom he loves and who rides Revenge to victory against Ponce's great runner, Tamarlane. Intensely interesting on three levels: in its depiction of human character, the nature of horses, and the training of champions. An unusually rich story.
