Gourmet fare for horse-loving youngsters in the incredible tale of an orphaned boy who has wandered homeless, hungry, seeking work around the countryside. Then miraculously he receives a summons to come and claim his uncle's estate -- a rundown Kentucky horse farm. The title is clear; the stallion and five brood mares had been hidden from the greedy claimants: the loyal old trainer stands by the 16-year old heir. And together they train the lovely until the Kentucky Derby is theirs. The trainer teaches Vance, and some other orphaned lads they bring in, that the long-hard run is best. But it seems an unbelievably short run from an orphanage to lord of the manor. Mr. Forster is absorbing when it comes to horses. And he can spin a yarn, as evidenced in the earlier Apache novel, Proud Land, and in Tamailane.
