Based on the premise that every person suffers from some handicap, either mental, physical or emotional, this book of brief biographies of outstanding men and women who have overcome severe difficulties to win fame, claims to be inspirational. Actually, its chief interest lies in the insight it gives into the lives of Lord Byron, Sir Walter Scott, Helen Keller, Agatha Christie, Robert Schuman, Marie Curie, Columbus, Edison, Nancy Merki, Alicia Alonso, Degas, and others. There is a gentle appeal to the morbid curiosity of even the normal reader. The individual biographies are condensed, but generally interesting.
