An earnest but too much underlined story of a marriage, which is real enough in essentials, but not emotionally vital. Fairly realistic representation of middle western and western small town life, and of the conflict between an army chaplain and a girl who forced marriage upon him, and whom he repaid by coldness and mental cruelty. It is an unpalatable and not wholly convincing story, with the psychological aspects oversimplified, and with many gaucheries of writing. Doubtful sales value.
