KICKAPOO

Mules may be stubborn, but they're far from dumb as young readers will discover when they meet Kickapoo, ""fastest and funniest mule in the state of Kansas"". The rodeo held great promise for Howdie McCloud who was determined to trade Kickapoo for a racing pony. But the rambunctious mule knew where home was and twice his sharpened senses and funny antics brought him straight back to an exasperated but generous Howdie. The boy's only chance now lay in the committee's decision to allow him to ride Kickapoo in the race. Considering this mule's special attributes, the answer is in the affirmative and guess who wins? A nice homey quality reminiscent of small town western Americana is conveyed both in text and in Wesley Dennis' flowing and expressive black and white pictures.
