In Judy, Lois Lenski has given us one of the best portraits in this regional series; she's a fierce-tempered, loyal, ambitious child, who with her family journeys north from the leaky Alabama sharecropper shack, following the crops -- down to Florida and up through New Jersey. Her father's ambition is a place of their own and a chance for Judy to go to school. There is sadness and insecurity, but Lois Lenski has the wisdom and the balance to see that there is adventure, excitement, promise, fulfillment, even where there is insecurity and too hard work. The migrants of the east have had few spokesmen. This story-through intended for nine to twelve year olds, has a lot for their elders as well. Excellent American scene material for school libraries.
