A better story than Phebe Fairchild or A-Going to the Westward. A seven-year old girl is ""bound out"" until she is sixteen to a step-uncle and aunt who run a tavern. The period is post-revolution, but Connecticut is still on edge over questions of loyalty, and the inn-keeper is suspect. A hard task master, he drives the child, almost mistreating her, but it takes a succession of incidents, an experience in running away and a growing sense of being a responsible person to convince the child that perhaps she has a home after all. Good picture of life and activities.
