THE INNOCENTS AT HOME

An English traveler in many parts of the world, (Within The Taurus, etc,) here gives an account of his trip to the United States, follows no particular itinerary or type of touring, but manages to acquire a comprehensive picture of the country as well as the people. From a hotel in New York City to staying with new, and young and artistic, friends in less comfortable quarters, to the South, on to Texas and the West, and back through the Middle West, he gets a chance for a longer, slower look at people, objects and places, landscapes and townscapes, and makes the differences -- and often the similarities -- alive and interesting. He finds hostile -- and friendly -- ""natives"", he becomes aware of the haves and have nots, his travels are saddened by the deaths of three friends, he covers most of the miles by bus, and finds much that he likes here. This non-scheduled kind of traveling produces some new views of our country, gives a fresh feeling for much that is taken for granted, and makes often stimulating reading.
