DADDY WAS A DOCTOR

An old-fashioned tintype of a country doctor in Brightville, Tennessee, which fills in and retouches fondly some of the episodes in a life of improvident individualism and benevolent service. This makes the rounds of practitioneering, focus on Doc, on Mama, who applied herself assiduously to bill collections- but was a soft touch for all the youngsters in the neighborhood, and on Ma- his mother -- a forceful, forthright character. There's Doc's devotion to his ball scores as well as bedsides; Mama's matchmaking- as well as her scattered housekeeping; the introduction of a groundhog in the home- which frightened away the practice; etc. etc. in a familiar pattern of family foibles and flurries, and in an I-remember recall by his daughter.
