The flat account of a family's observations of a pair of nesting cardinals and their new-born babies--all of which are shared with the son's class and supplemented by information from a library book. Frequently David and Dad look through the latter's telephoto lens, and just when you're getting most impatient (because the drawings are so deficient) and most eager for a look yourself, there are six pages of color photos of the cardinals, egg to fledgling. They're as splendid as the male; the balance is as drab as the female.
