Sympathetically written adventures of a Mexican boy, who is almost old enough to do things, describe his first trip to the big city from one of the isolated lake islands nearby. Besides the frustrating waiting to be allowed to go to market with his father, Julio has two ""friends"" who make his life even harder; Felipe and Tomas, slightly older and worried lest the abler Julio be given undue privileges, plans some mean tricks that work in Julio's disfavor. Now more determined than ever, Julio stows away in his father's boat, goes to the city and has an exciting time of it before he is welcomed home with open arms. Despite some melodramatics, a fair view of Mexican peasant life and a boy who gets a chance.
