Told in the first person, these school days of a budding prima ballerina have all the exuberance of the ballet- its rewards both bitter and sweet- and as added attraction, a dream come true ending. An orphan, 15-year old Veronica, lives at a boarding house with friends. Her life revolves around three centers,- the ballet, the boarding house and Northumbria where she spends Christmas with relatives. Veronica instills it with suspense, emotion and hard work. At school there is the jealousy of another student that almost keeps her from her first big chance; at home the trials of another dancer end happily in marriage with a painter; and in the north a young composer Sebastian's jealousy of Veronica's career softens, when they are both older, for the bright outcome.
