First, roll out the fictional form as flat as possible and begin with an army wife and husband who go to the Philippines just at the end of the war. Beef up some personal details to disguise the fact that the wife is you. Flavor it from the start with hardship and travail to prove your good will in staying. Lizards in eggs. Pickpockets. Falling into a sewer. Stiffen it with your admonition that you will defy convention (and fellow Americanos) who will tell you to stay away from the people your husband came to help. Heat it with plenty of fiery comments about a great nation that really only needs love. Spatter it with a few incidents to show their loveability. Fold in some grimy notes about horrible living conditions, along with historical incidents (MacArthur, Corregidor, etc.) and add a frosting about how we can defeat Communism, and prepare to serve it to the ladies' magazine market.
