Patterned and predictable adventures in Florida in 1834 and 1835 follow Jim Brady, 14 and an orphan, as he sets out from Philadelphia. Faced with the necessity of earning his own way in the world, Jim realizes his only course of action lies in trying to find his Uncle Matt, a hunter in the Florida wilds. But on the way down Jim is lucky enough to run into a Senator Anderson from Baltimore, who takes a liking to him and asks him to be his Florida correspondent and report on the social and political state of affairs. This Jim does, while he hunts with Uncle Matt, sees the tragedy of the Indian wars, and finds his grandfather-an actor with a travelling company. Then with these ways of life open to him Jim decides in favor of the Senator's offer to return to Washington with him and study for a future as a lawmaker. Simple solutions to national and personal problems here.
