CHICKENS AND HOW TO RAISE THEM

To those who know and like Louis Darling's work there is something quite muted and dignified about his beautifully photographic drawings. They portray, even through chickens, the scale of animal attributes that rouses affection by chance poses and expressions that have a remarkable combination of sympathy and exactness. Here, his solemn text is a perfect companion to the pictures. It tells how to make a chicken house and yard, how and at what stage to buy and care for different kinds of chickens, the physiology of the laying process. And at the end it quite sublimely places chickens in the scale of intelligence that culminates in human understanding. A fine introduction.
