H.L. MENCKEN ON MUSIC

Taken from the Smart Set. the Christomathy, the Prejudices, and various editions of the Baltimore Evening Sun, the pieces in this collection evince the Gargantuan curiosity, delightful spontaneity, and formidable skill with language well-known to Mencken's reading public. Less well-known are Mencken's lifelong interest, study, and participation in music which make these pieces knowledgeable as well as delightful. Included here are Mencken's reviews of musical performances and books about music plus his writings on great composers, operas, operettas, and folk music. Louis Cheslock, a professional musician and friend to Mencken, also includes a sketch of H.L.'s musical life and a Postlude concerning the history and membership of the famous Saturday Night Club.
