THE POETRY AND PROSE OF WALT WHITMAN

This basic edition of Whitman is an excellent volume in the Library of Living Literature, and its greatest value, perhaps, lies in the keen critical judgment used in the selections, drawn from his prose writings as well as Leaves of Grass and Rejected Poems. In addition to Whitman's own writings, this volume includes selections from contemporaneous and modern opinion and revaluation. Mr. Untermeyer has contributed a biographical introduction and analytical appraisal, praise and dissent. Some of the controversial issues which have kept Whitman a topic of idealization and vituperation for nearly a century are here objectively viewed, with Untermeyer's conclusion that ""the book is the man... a challenging and controversial figure...a titan in his times and in our own.
