NO NEWS FROM HELEN

Effective paralleling of a story within a story, in this dramatic handling of the experiences of Danny Mather, newly arrived in war-torn London from the horrors of the Malayan campaign, a physical and psychological wreck, haunted by his loss of wife and son, the uncertainty of their survival -- and his own nightmare of jungle fighting, escape, and sights of war. Then in sharp contrast, giving Golding his opportunity for and almost cruel characterization, is the picture of Danny's mother and her four sisters, in solemn conclave, celebrating by reunion, the 50th anniversay of their mother's funeral, and resenting any intrusion of the world today. Tragic outcome.
