. . . was lonely. But no moose children came to play, for Melvin's family lived in the south, while all the other moose families were in the North. (Melvin's father took cold too easily for them to live in the north woods.) Mrs. Moose pointed the way North to little Melvin (a somewhat mangy baby moose) and Melvin set out to find other moose children. Not knowing how moose children would look, he struck up acquaintance with a busy baby beaver, a fawn and a bear cub. The foursome frolicked northward, seeking playmates, despite Mrs. Moose's warning that Melvin's summer fur coat was not very warm. Soon a great owl frightened them into retracing their steps. The story is slight, but Slobodkin's linear tracking adds colorful appeal.
