GIVE US THIS DAY

The author of Blessed Is The Man has written in Give Us This Day possibly a more warmly human novel, but not so powerful a one. As a second novel it is a relief to find that he is not a one-book-writer -- that his sense of human values and plot structure is strengthened -- that this story of a baker and his son and their relations to each other and to the business they have grown up with has the same sense of pride of accomplishment that was so vital a factor in the other book. The Chicago background somewhat limited the sale of Blessed Is The Man. This new story might happen anywhere. Zara is worth watching.
