THE SUMMER KITCHEN

Another culinary composition from Mrs. Appleyard -- and her daughter Cicely -- concentrates on spring through fall accoutrements for a well filled stomach and a well tantalized palate. All the menus, recipes and attendant individual quirks are here along with the local Vermont countryside throughout the seasons, and the garden products occupy a definite place in meal planning. The settings -- lunches, picnics, teas, suppers, special celebrations and a dance -- are conducive to specialties, succulent even to read about, and there is plenty about Mrs. Appleyard's latest stories into the handicrafts while her neighbors turn out their share of dishes and projects. There's an Indian princess to cook curry, a gustatory critic with whom to trade gastronomic feats; there's a community covered-dish gathering; there are short cuts and freezer know-how and kitchen lore of all kinds. A spur to extra efforts, this should taste as well as it reads, and be well worth what added fussing is necessary.
