A DICTIONARY OF ANTIQUES AND THE DECORATIVE ARTS

This dictionary has grown out of a project undertaken by two semi-professional connoisseurs for their own use. As collectors and scholars they have explored museums, galleries, churches, palaces, etc. where the great works of art are brought together; they have sought out the origins, the significance of terms; they have extended their investigations from America to Europe to the Orient -- and the scope to include the decorative arts as well as antiques. For the average uninitiated layman, Drepperd or the recently revised Connoisseur Concise Encyclopedia of Antiques (Hawthorn) would probably suffice. To the more advanced collector and student, this new Dictionary meets more exactly the demands of scholarship. The subjects covered are indicated in the subtitle:- A Book of Reference for Glass, Furniture, Ceramics, Silver, Periods, Styles, Technical Terms, etc. But the ""Etc."" manages to include a vast number of items- to a total of over 5000 entries, with 724 line drawings and 182 photographs. The comprehensive Bibliography provides suggestions for further study in specific areas.
