The premise is a silly one--poor-speller Arthur may have anything he can spell--but the way it's worked out is downright dumb, what with Arthur misspelling ""jeans"" as ""genes"" (and his parents eventually producing two boys named Gene); misspelling ""movie"" as ""moving"" (they watch a van: ""There was a lot of action, but not much story""); misspelling ""records"" ridiculously as ""wreckers""; and so on. Once he can spell, of course, he's fortune's tot--and rewarded, at the last, with a dish of ""S-p-a-g-h-e-t-t-i."" That last wordless look at Arthur digging in is the book's best moment.
