THE FIRST BOOK OF EARLY SETTLERS

Her First Book of New England introduced a new historical and regional group of First books, and this seems a natural outgrowth. Too many young students of our history assume that the Pilgrim Fathers of Plymouth were the white founders of our country. This book does a good deal to correct that misconception. In addition to the New England settlers,- the Jamestown group, the Dutch of New Amsterdam, the Swedes at Fort Christina, each rate a chapter. Although many of the stories here told are familiar ones, the interpretations take advantage of modern scholarship and the writing is lively.
