MARC AND PIXIE: And the Walls in Mrs. Jones' Garden

A gardener who loves to build stone walls, a mistress who loves the walls he builds, and a whole city of chipmunks who love to dig their burrows behind the holes between the stones: all are happy until a Siamese cat named Pixie joins the menage--and, it turns out, are happy again after one chase scene in which Pixie and Marc (the leading chipmunk) are injured but learn while recuperating to get along. Marc and Pixie are too easily domesticated to win our attention, and Duvoisin's collage-like illustrations, where the stones are more interesting than the people, are just as inert.
