A DOLL FOR MARIE

<p>Marie, a poor Parisian child, acquired an antique doll through the fortuitous quarrel of a dachshund and a fox terrier. But originally the precious but lonely doll had sat with other rarities in an antique shop, hoping always for a little girl to buy her. Instead she became the property of an old lady, who added her to the other antiques of her cluttery quarters. The Siamese cat knocked the doll off her perch on the piano. She fell on the dachshund who was sleeping. Angry at being disturbed, he rushed off into the street with the doll in his jaws. Roger Duvoisin's illustrations are similar to those he has done for other books of this type, light colors and restless lines. They show the quarrel between the dachshund and stray terrier who chew up her finery, then leave the bedraggled doll in the gutter where Marie, who earlier in the story had admired the doll, finds her. Good as well for independent reading in the first two grades.</p>
