HOW THE RABBIT STOLE THE MOON

Back in the time ""when the world was altogether dark at night,"" the animals send a delegation to the sun--but though the elk pleads, the bear threatens, and the snake flatters, the sun refuses to give them any of his light. And so the little rabbit sets off on his own, and when the sun refuses him too, he takes a sudden bite of that glowering, chicken-beaked orb, drops the chunk in his haste to get away, then tosses the broken pieces into the sky. Ergo: moon and stars. An unoriginal pseudo-folktale (a real one wouldn't allow the raven to get away with saying ""No one wants to see others suffer""), with illustrations that are harsh, heavy, and generally alienating despite that one clever stroke in beaking the sun.
