There seems to me to be a good deal of sound and fury in this book, signifying little. A long-winded story, written in the vernacular, of a clerk in a shipping office who lost his job, and joining forces with an ex-pal, got berths for both of them on one of the freighters belonging to the company for whom he had worked. Adventures along the water front, hit or miss jockeying round and about, secret shipping of contraband liquor, listening in on shady deals -- and a thread of so-called romance in that both men have slept with a Hoboken damsel of easy virtue, and one of them has married her. Hard-bitten tale, which most shops can pass up.
