Davies' first The Paper Dolls was a suspense-scifi combo and for a time one suspects that the unnatural elements here may also be supernatural. Lewis Pinder, a middle-aged man, is found unconscious, and he never regains his memory even though a cloverleaf birthmark suggests he should have had one of four identities, all dead. Sporadic fires, a murder in a hospital, and a kidnapping endanger C.I.D. Roger Fenn's investigation of the nameless man behind the empty eyes. A smooth complex of unknowns and unguessables.
