Com. Coals is one of four artists each doing a particular job for the Navy, his duty to paint records of whatever actions he shares. This intensely moving picture of his trip on a cruiser convoying to Iceland and his return trip on an empty merchant ship bear evidence of his being an artist in words as well as oils. One catches the sense of danger, the courage, the alertness, the thoughts of sailors, the small of the sea and the smoke of battle. His description of the sinking of the Reuben James and the rescue of the crew is word artistry at its best. A small log, but a significant record of the Navy in action.
