THE DADDIES BOAT

A little girl tells about life on the island where her family summers at their beach house, and especially about waiting for the Friday boat--named long ago because it brings ""mostly daddies for the weekend."" During the week, ""the two of us"" have a good enough time with picnics, marketing, day camp, and bedtime stories, but the week's climax is always meeting the boat--and greeting Mommy when she gets off. With cleverly ambiguous glimpses of the parent at the beach house, Chessare helps to keep the surprise ending a secret until the right moment, her attractive, rust-outlined watercolors as relaxed as a summer weekend. An entertaining challenge to preconceptions.
