I loved this story of the little canal boat girl whose one ambition was to own a conch shell horn like Captain Tucker's, one of her friends of the Susquehanna Canal. The period is 1885 -- the setting unusual, as it gives the young reader a picture of canal boat life, the looks, the village fairs, the daily round of activities, as coal is carried from the mines to the towns along the banks. Good story, well told, and illustrated by the author, who is better known as an illustrator than as a writer. There are ten pictures in full color, and lots of black and white. A book for the upper group of this age-group -- third and fourth grade level. Regional interest for Pennsylvania as plus sale value.
