Completely satisfying and very different Revolutionary War story with a charm all its own. A 12-year old drummer, Stephen, of Washington's army, is wounded, separated from his brother, Dennis, and sent to Ephrata, a religious cloister in Pennsylvania with other wounded soldiers. Stephen, punished, overhears a traitorous plan to capture General Washington, and he and Brother Jabez work out an extremely clever plan to save the Commander. Stephen becomes a hero, is reunited with Dennis, and finds out Brother Jabez' secret. A somewhat older story than Luille Wallower's earlier books -- and with the same characteristic feel of authenticity of background and period.
