The glow of virtue and achievement for the story of Stephen North, who sets up practice in Allerton, when with Crane, a new, young, substitute minister, they take care of the physical and spiritual needs of the village. Publicly, they contend with corrupt politics in an attempt to better conditions among the poor, and privately Stephen has a touch and go romance with Gail -- whom he wants to marry -- as against Barbara, whom he does not want to marry.... In spite of pneumonia, undulant fever, and measles, the air around these parts is pretty pure.
