Jack Hanna, director of the Columbus Zoo, is credited with ""creating"" this Pat-the-Bunny-style tactile survey of seven animals plus the mirrored reader. As narrator, Hanna introduces the llama's woolly fur, the tiger's rough tongue, and the penguin chick's down, and contrasts the giraffe's velvety horn with the rhino's, which feels ""hard like wood."" Textile insets effectively mimic the ""feel"" of each; the animals are recognizable in the attractive realistic illustrations--though since they're not shown in their entirety, this is not a wholly satisfactory introduction to them for very young children. Plastic spiral-bound, fairly sturdy, and a perfect preamble or follow-up to a visit to a petting zoo.
