KIRKUS REVIEW

The desultory, derelict world of ""mid-century people- not bound by morals but by small conventions"" is examined and found wanting through Felix Thorne, a fairly successful suburhanlte. His marriage to Eugenia is empty and childless- and even the cat Gumdrop does not seem to make it adhere. And so with ""no earth under our feet, no heaven over our heads"" he looks for happiness with Monica- who has not the courage to leave her husband. Muriel, one of his clients, offers him physical passion; so does Eve, an insatiable type he comes home to find that Eugenia has walked out on him-- and he goes on to find his answers elsewhere... For Felix Thorne, this summer is certainly a season of for Lewisohn, an opportunity to inventory lives in terms of sententious soul searching and spurious sex.
