KIRKUS REVIEW

This is a ""complete edition"", containing reproductions of all of the known drawings of Peter the Elder. Each of the 154 plates, many of them the size of the original drawings, is listed and discussed in the critical catalog at the back of the book. The introduction, illustrated with 50 reproductions, is a critical discussion of Bruegel's artistic development and his relation to his predecessors and followers. The author, who died before the book was published, was Director of the Picture Gallery of the Akademic in Vienna and a well-known authority on Netherlandish art. The book also includes an illustrated chapter on the many imitations which have been ascribed to Bruegel at various: times. A beautifully designed and executed work.
