It had been two years since Miranda's mother died, two years since Pa Left her in Nebraska with Aunt Liz and went on alone to California. Eleven-year-old Miranda never doubled that he would send for her; but when Pa's letter finally came, Aunt Liz claimed the $20 he sent as fair payment for her ""generosity"" to her niece. Desperate but still determined, Miranda succeeds in her third attempt to stow away on a passing wagon train and is, finally, headed for California and a home of her own. A girls' book, with a lovely and appealing little heroine but insufficient plot development for a story of this length.
