Gnoli, who died in 1970, painted meticulously detailed canvases of everyday objects (paisley bedspreads, striped neckties, buttonholes, armchairs and fat women in flowered upholstery, kitchen tables and printed tablecloths) in a variety of styles emphasizing texture, rhythmic repetition, and geometrical relationships. Magnificent black-and-white reproductions, plus a handful in color. Beautiful and disturbing.
