BUILDING FOR THE ELDERLY

While this is not the type of book we ordinarily presume to feel qualified to cover, we are making an exception here because of the need for clarification on a subject of increasingly wide concern. America is somewhat behind the times in viewing the housing problems of the elderly as a widespread issue. In this book- which serves primarily perhaps as a guide to planning specific housing -- there is a sound approach to basic principles incorporating such things as:- the problems of the elderly to recognize; who should build- church groups, fraternal groups, citizen groups, community projects; what to build- for independent living, group living; where, at what cost, what is other function of the architect, etc. The balancing of the text with 400 plans, photographs and drawings, is a sound analysis of the planning and construction of the project,- the accommodations for living and service space; recognition of the limitations of the elderly; provision for activities. A final check list serves to pick up salient points made throughout in a thoroughly practical and constructive way. This should be required reading for individuals or groups concerned in housing of today as it relates to provision for our growing class of elderly citizens.
