Backstage animal life at the Metropolitan Opera House, a little on the sentimental side but with lavish colored pencil drawings by the authors that have humor and provide a nice setting for a run through of "The Magic Flute" as part of the story. A mouse family, Maestro Petrini and his wife and children, live way upstairs in an old harp box from which the Maestro descends every evening to help the prompter turn his pages. Mefisto the cat, who hates music, lives in the basement.. For an occasion all the Petrinis go to see "The Magic Flute", and during the performance Maestro Petrini, overcome by the music, rushes to dance on the stage, unaware of lurking Mefisto. In the nick of time Mefisto is bewitched, dances too, and cat and mouse become friends.
