Jerry Adams and his dog, Shep, were accredited members of the expedition organized by ""the Black Spaniard,"" Manuel Lisa, to secure for himself the rights to the fur trade in the newly opened Northwest Territory, in 1807. With an oddly assorted crew and hunters and voyageurs drawn from survivors of the Lewis and Clark expedition, he set out with a 20-ton keelboat. The facts are based on actual records, though Jerry and Shep are fictitious characters. Good historical fiction, though Jerry's escapes are not always wholly credible.
