Though eighth-grader Pegeen O'Hara could not take part in the local play at her school in Stratford, Canada, because she had agreed to deliver papers for her sick comrade, Richie Ross, the inauguration of the Shakespeare Festival brought the lure of the theatre into her home. Pegeen's widowed mother conducted a boarding house. Pegeen regarded the new boarder, Edward Briddlecomb, as her personal emissary from Stratford, England. The germination and flowering of the festival in Canada's Stratford is depicted with a wholesome regard for human values and a satisfactory denouement with Pegeen's bit part in a film revolving about the Festival.
