FLIGHT TO JEWELL ISLAND

This conversion of history into story is minimal on both counts and while it is based on an authentic incident (the sacking and burning of Maine towns and settlements in 1676) there's a certain carryover of Pilgrim austerity. There's a certain moral instruction, as well, when the young hero Thomas Potts (whom the author has aged here from nine to thirteen) learns that bravery lies in fear , controlled and conquered. The physical aspects of the story are slight and deal with the removal of Thomas and his family to presumably safety on Jewell Island, but ""no place is too far for the Indians to attack"" and so they do and Thomas fires a warning shot....Implements without invigorating that inevitable grade school requirement.
