A woman must face her past trauma after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in this debut novel of love and loss.

Micaela Lewiski should be happy; after all, she achieved her dream of becoming a star on Broadway, which turned into a long and successful acting career. Now retired at 49, she still gets autograph requests from loyal fans. But she carries a dark secret—one that threatens to destroy her: She struggles with crippling depression and anxiety. The sudden loss of a loved one long ago still haunts her, and the guilt she feels about the death is almost unbearable. When she’s diagnosed with cancer, she feels as if things couldn’t get any worse. Now, in the face of almost certain death, she struggles with telling her friends and family the bad news. But could this diagnosis actually be a chance to heal? With time running out, Micaela must make a choice to let go of the past in order to enjoy the time that she has left. At times, Marill’s novel is emotionally wrenching, as it doesn’t shy away from life’s tragedies and isn’t afraid to ask some tough questions. As readers follow Micaela on her courageous journey from despair to acceptance, they’ll find it hard not to be inspired by her transformation. Along the way, her narration gives readers exclusive access to her most intimate thoughts: “Was I ready to face my past? The memory of Connor’s death left me between a state of shock and a blessed sense of emotional release.” The plot grapples with the concept of fate, but the raw, authentic tone keeps this theme from turning into a cliché. The author also wisely chooses to keep Micaela’s past trauma a mystery until later in the book; when the horrific incident is finally revealed, many pieces fall into place.

A somber but powerful story about enduring unthinkable tragedy.
