The scientists described are particularly notable for the uses to which they have put cameras. The interest in photography as vocation or avocation often starts here and this book can double as science/career information. The Pooles have penetrated the anonymity surrounding the huge research projects and present short biographies of the men who have made essential contributions to present knowledge by developing special cameras for particular situations. For instance, there is Edgerton's strobe camera and its role in underwater exploration; McCrosky's use of the Super-Schmidt camera and its tracking of satellites and meteor falls; Schrader's direction of aerial and level cameras in the National Geographic Society's cartography program. These sketches are written in the style of good magazine articles with an excellent eye for the telling background detail.
