In the race for printed space about extra-terrestrial exploration, these could easily be forgotten men and women. This starts with a valid contrast between the totally individual effort of the Wright brothers in early aviation and the numberless personnel required to get one man into space. The Pooles have collected career information on the methods and programs of a dozen experts whose coordination of present ata and whose direction of further research makes the man or men in the capsule possible. The biographies emphasize the jobs and are in no way personality portraits. Among the men and women who are included: Drs. Roman and Jocelyn Gill-- concerned with manned and unmanned space-labs to record and analyze outer space phenomena; Dr. Eugene shoemaker-- an astrogeologist mapping terrain and studying the physical materials of planets and satellites; Warren J. North-- Chief of Flight Crew Operations in charge of training astronauts; and Charles A. Berry, M.D.-- Chief of Medical Operations and directing pioneer investigations in space medicine. The Pooles write well and lucidly, s has often been noted before in these pages.
