THE SHY ONES by Lynn Hall

Robin Morgan after a disastrous dance (she's about fourteen) feels so ""gosh darned ordinary""; she's also very skittery and so is the golden retriever she finds with a broken leg (running away from an owner who was going to put her away). Well, all through the summer there are lots of Gro-Pup lessons for both Robin and her adopted dog; she works to take care of the vet's bill; she gentles her dog and grooms her for show; she gets new glasses herself--and a boy to date her. All this is also ""gosh darned ordinary"" but quite nice and natural, and it will do as a filler rather than a stretcher for girls this age.
