After years of scouring flea markets and yard sales, Tilly Trumble has filled her house and yard with stained, broken-down chairs—all but a special spot in front of the fire that she’s saving for a “four-legged scruffy old thing that was really something else.” And when that “something else” arrives unexpectedly, in the form of a bright-eyed, well-trained, definitely scruffy dog, her efforts to shoo it away don’t last very long at all. Surrounded by battered seating of often amusingly peculiar design, Tilly strides about purposefully in Greenseid’s twisty, richly colored pictures, her grin and her woolly shock of gray hair making her look like everyone’s favorite grandma. A portion of the royalties from this sketchy but engaging animal-adoption story will go to PETA. (Picture book. 6-8)
