HORSES IN THE CIRCUS RING

A brief overview of various circus horse acts. Saville mentions some of the difficulties in training and performing with horses, especially in teams or in stunt-riding acts. She has selected diverse performances to photograph and describe--e.g., a solo act in the Big Apple Circus; a pyramid of Tartars from the Moscow Circus; a comedy routine from the French Circus Gruss. For the most part, the photographs are clear, colorful and informative--a tribute to Saville's skill, given the constant movement of and chancy lighting on her subjects. The text is adequate as an introduction to animal training. For collections needing additional materials on circuses.
